Goretti Carvalho

I
immigrated from the island of Terceira, in the Azores to Watsonville when I was
16 years old. In Terceira, I studied at Escola Industrial e Comercial de Angra
do Heroismo. I attended Formacao Feminina, where I studied English, French and
Geometric Art. My plan was to teach art and attend Belas Artes in Lisbon.
Instead I channeled my creative energy into hair design by becoming a
cosmetologist. I had my own business in Watsonville for 25 years.
Oil is
my Favorite medium because it lends itself to a longer and more thoughtful
creative process.
I am heavily influenced by my island culture; the landscape, the people, and
folklore. I am basically self taught but have studied with Jon Blanchette and
more recently with Linda Webb. Mr. Blanchette's lessons in still life
paintings are seen in my early works. I would define myself as a traditional
landscape, seascape and still life painter leaning toward impressionism. While
I am detail-oriented, I try to capture a mood in my paintings. I am presently
studying water-color techniques.
I am a
married mother of four sons and recently became a first time grandmother. I am
renewing a passion for classical music by studying the violin at Cabrillo
College.
