Jerry Harness
Born in Dayton, Ohio with eight brothers and sisters I joined the navy after
graduating fro high school. While serving in Alaska, I was the 17th
Naval district artist. After naval drafting school I was transferred to the Sea
Bees and Admiral Jelly’s inspection team. After Korean War service, I returned
to Dayton, married and started a career in engineering. My work with General
Motor R & D and Ford Aerospace was very rewarding. After retirement my art was
displayed at the Almaden Fine Arts Gallery for two years, until we moved to
Monterey.
My interest in the work of Norman Rockwell precluded study at the Dayton Arts
Institute while in grade school. While in high school there were private
lessons from Lewie Eugene Thompson ( a promanate Portrait artist with a Dayton,
Ohio Studio). My painting was restricted to oil, pastel and pencil portraits.
Following lung cancer surgery my art interests expanded into watercolor. My
subject matter also expanded.
