Annie MacHale - Weaving

For the last 30 years I have been weaving on an inkle loom.
This type of loom makes narrow pieces, no more than 6” in width.
While some people may find this limiting, I have not.
There is an endless thrill in combining colors into patterns.
My idea in creating a woven piece is that it should be both functional and
beautiful. I have created many types of useful everyday items including:
watchbands, shoelaces, ribbons, belts, bags, clothing trim, dog leashes, straps
for cameras, guitars and other instruments.

For several years, my focus has been on making custom items for people who do
historical re-enactments of the Fur Trade Era (late 1700’s to early 1800’s).
These “Mountain Men” wear woven sashes and garters and use straps for rifles,
powder horns and bags. All natural fibers are used for these and the colors are
somewhat muted, or earth tones.

Recently, I have found inspiration from such interesting fibers as: handspun
wool blends, bamboo, corn, soy and banana fibers, and yarn spun in Nepal from
shredded silk sari fabric.
